Galli: Italy needs to do something differently, football has evolved. Former Milan defender Filippo Galli spoke about how the situation in Italian football can be changed after the Italian national team failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
The Italians lost to Bosnia and Herzegovina (1:1, 1:4 on penalties) in the final play-off match for the right to qualify for the tournament. The team played with ten men after defender Alessandro Bastoni was sent off at the end of the first half.
The national team did not qualify for the World Cup for the third time in a row.
The fact that under Mancini`s leadership Italy became European champions, playing in a more active role
It was he who played differently, and you can win or lose, nothing guarantees victory. Unfortunately, there are still coaches who say that we should not distort our DNA, because that is what led us to victories, that we should not copy Barcelona. We still think we are the best, resorting to the speculative idea of football that has led us to victories in the past. Today this is no longer enough, we need something different, because others do things differently, football has evolved.
About what was disappointing about yesterday`s match
We scored due to a bad clearance. But they continued to play. People focus on Bastogne`s red card, but how did it happen? It was a clearance made because they wanted to clear the ball because they were afraid, and they wanted to stall for time because they were ahead. A counter-attack began, first Mancini made a diagonal mistake and Bastogne was the last to intervene. But it was a mistake in thinking, in principle.
About what can change
We need someone who will decide something, who thinks differently. There is no point in continuing to change people if their thinking remains the same. I`m not talking about presidents, but about those who, for example, head the technical department. We need to change our thinking about how we should play football. We still think about the speculative idea of football based on individuality, we keep talking about how footballers don`t know how to play one-on-one. But football is a team game, where individuality is valued but the collective is celebrated. These two concepts should not be separated. Let me give you an example.
When it comes to talent, I hear people say: there are no streets, no playgrounds. But in the youth sector we do not reproduce what is done on the street, but rather training, which is very far from playing football. Besides, football is a complex game, we can`t oversimplify it. I have a blog called The Complexity of Football, precisely because I believe that football is not simple.
The fact that when playing with ten men, Italy was only thinking about how to move the game analyzed by dropping odds movement further from their goal
Of course, when playing with ten men, you resort to this even more. This is our habit. We talk about DNA, history, even wars. But let`s not forget that, with all due respect to what our grandparents did, then the Americans came to free us. Should we still wait for someone to come and free us? - said Gally.
