Red Bull reserve driver Daniel Ricciardo said that he made a conscious decision to take a one-year break from racing in Formula 1.

As the second half of the season progressed, I realized that I needed to take a small step aside, restructure a little, reboot, in order to again feel a strong love for Formula 1. Because when you`re performing at this level, it`s hard to give credit to both yourself and those around you if you don`t feel love for what you do. I`m not saying I lost that love of racing, but I was afraid I might lose it.


Ricciardo also admitted that he feared the situation would worsen if, given his condition, he was unable to perform at his best next season:


Yes, Formula 1 drivers are very good at what they do. But at the same time, we are also people - we get tired, exhausted, our reserves of strength are depleted. And in such a high-level sport, this can be dangerous - you cannot afford to perform even at 99 percent of your capabilities. So yes, I was really afraid that I might not be at my best if I played another season.
