George Russell spoke about how he perceives success in the battle with Lewis Hamilton.
Russell was ahead of his experienced teammate at the end of his first season at Mercedes.
For me, winning in Brazil is more important than the position in the standings. In the end, no one remembers that I beat Lewis on points. I was only fourth.
If a year ago I had been offered a win, a pole and eight podiums, I would have said: No, thank you. My ambitions and those of the team are much higher, " Russell told Auto, Motor und Sport.
George also shared his thoughts on working with the seven-time Formula 1 champion:
I think Lewis and I have a good relationship. Maybe because in the past the age difference between teammates was smaller, riders fought for leadership within the team. In our case, there is no first number, we are on equal terms.
We help each other, try to improve the car and bring Mercedes back to the top. The dynamics within the team are different from, say, Lewis and Fernando [Alonso], Sebastian [Vettel] and Mark [Webber] or Prost and Senna - drivers were fighting around the same age.
I hope everything continues like this. If the relationship goes sour, it will not benefit the team and will have a negative impact on ourselves. Maybe not having a winning car has helped us understand the importance of good relationships, " GPblog quotes the Briton as saying.
